Ty Burrell, better known as Phil Dunphy on “Modern Family,” will be returning to Salt Lake in May.
Burrell has a long-standing love affair with Utah’s capital since he took the stage at Pioneer Theater in 1999. In 2014, Burrell published a letter in The Huffington Post expressing his love for the area in which he said,“I loved you immediately for your humility and your unassuming nature.”
Burrell’s love and involvement with Salt Lake led him to open Beer Bar in April 2014. The bar serves over 150 different beers and a menu of classic bar favorites. In addition, Burrell co-owns Bar-X, next door to Beer Bar.
On May 22, Burrell and his wife Holly will be joining KUER’s Doug Fabrizio, food expert Vanessa Chang and a panel of judges for the fourth annual Savory Salt Lake. Judges will be asked to give their opinions, support and criticisms of dishes from 20 vendors in the valley, including Mazza Middle Eastern Cuisine, Tin Angel Cafe and Les Madeleines. The event will be held at The Tower at Rice Eccles Stadium, and all proceeds will benefit the programming on KUER 90.1, NPR Utah.
Raven James, a senior in anthropology, said she thinks the event sounds like a perfect combination of her favorite things.
“‘Modern Family’ and good food — how can you go wrong?” James said. “[Burrell] is not only a super funny guy on TV but also a pretty legit person in real life.”
Arissa Barrowes, a sophomore in sociology, said she’s impressed with the Salt Lake food scene that will be participating in the event.
“When I first moved to Salt Lake I remember being impressed with the quality of restaurants,” Barrowes said. “There are so many locally owned restaurants around town, and each one is impressive in its own right.”
Tickets to the fourth annual Savory Salt Lake went on sale April 10 and are $120 per person. Proceeds will go toward supporting KUER and celebrating public radio in Utah.
Ty Burrell, who plays the hapless dad Phil Dunphy in the US sitcom Modern Family, took time out from a 10-day sightseeing tour of the UAE to dish out advice to aspiring actors and filmmakers at New York University Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.
The bashful actor told a packed audience the reason why he thinks Modern Family has been the best show of his life.
“Sadly, I don’t think I’m that different to Phil. I walk into light bulbs, I trip and fall into water, and I’m constantly trying to make my daughters laugh with a 0 per cent success rate – unless I fall over, in which case I have 100 per cent success,” he said.
Burrell has two daughters, ages 2 and 5.
“I’m much less mature than my five-year-old,” he said.
His girls enjoy watching the show on the sofa alongside their dad, though he admits“they don’t fully understand what it’s about”.
Burrell branched out into voiceover work with his latest kids movie, Mr Peabody and Sherman. He told the audience how that compares with the six years he has spent on Modern Family.
“Voiceovers are a very precise medium. It can be harder than acting. I’m not very good at it. It can get crazy,” Burrell said.
“You don’t know what you’re saying after a while, you just see the mouth moving. At times, it took 100 takes for one line. But for a guy coming into this later in life, it’s all so exciting. I’m living my second childhood.”
The 47-year-old has been enjoying Abu Dhabi’s tourist hotspots with his wife, Holly, since he arrived in the UAE last Friday. He tried out the rollercoaster at Ferrari World, dropped into local pilates and yoga centre Bodytree Studio and dined on sea bass and lemon tart for lunch at Saadiyat Beach Club, accompanied by Emirati director Ali Mustafa and Image Nation chairman Mohamed Al Mubarak. He was also scheduled to appear at The Act Dubai on Thursday night.
The Modern Family star Ty Burrell – one of the unlikeliest celebrities to drop into Abu Dhabi in recent memory – sure is making the most of his 10-day vacation in the capital.
There was the visit to Ferrari World, the talk at New York University Abu Dhabi, and then this stop, at yoga and pilates centre Bodytree Studios.
We’re not sure if Burrell is a yoga or pilates enthusiast, but he did enjoy a cup of goodness in the studio’s juice bar Nectar (which we can highly recommend if you are into healthy snacks, by the way).
He also met and posed for a picture with some of the Abu Dhabi studio’s staff, which was then posted to its Facebook page. If you are wondering how on earth Burrell ended up in a yoga studio, but not doing yoga, here’s the scoop: we hear Burrell has a friend in common with Nadia Sehwiel, co-owner.
